About the Artist

Background

Lauren Timpson

Lauren graduated magna cum laude from Lafayette College in 2008 with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Studio Art and completed her Masters of Science in Biomedical Visualization at the University of Illinois in May 2010. Her graduate research project involved the development of a prototype surgical instrument training program for residents and nurses in collaboration with Dr. Pravin Patel of the University of Illinois Medical School and Shriners Children's Hospital. The prototype can be accessed by clicking here. At the moment, Lauren works full-time at NorthPaws Veterinary Center in addition to being an independent medical illustration consultant for Electronic Publishing Systems (EPS) in New York as well as completing several other freelance projects on the side. In addition to being an artist, Lauren is an avid equestrian and currently leases and trains an off-the-track Thoroughbred in Providence, RI where she currently resides along with her boyfriend and several other pets. She also enojys playing the viola and is a self-taught violinist.

Lauren's artistic talents stem from an early interest in pencil sketching and watercolor. She often combines these traditional styles with modern technology, preferring to begin the design process with paper and pencil before moving on to the computer. Specializing in line and color illustration in the medical and veterinary fields, Lauren is fascinated with emulating realism as well as illustrating the beauty of the natural form. She is a member of the University of Illinois' Student Association of Medical Artists (SAMA) as well as the internationally recognized Association of Medical Illustrators. In the fall of 2009 her artwork was featured in an exhibit at Chicago's International Museum of Surgical Science and she was subsequently published in the Hektoen International online journal of medical humanities (November 2009). In addition she has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons through a colaboration with Dr. Edward Abraham of the University of Illinois in 2010.
